APDye 800Z is an amphoteric charge-balancing dye with equal numbers of anionic sulfonate and cationic ammonium residues, a structural feature that reduces interactions with off-target biological surfaces. It is a conceptually novel sterically shielded NIR cyanine heptamethine dye. The dye contains two shielding PEG arms directly on both sides of the heptamethyl fluorescent dye, which prevents any undesired bimolecular association process and thus significantly increases the fluorescence brightness.
