The Boc protecting group can be removed under acidic conditions and allow further reaction of the amine with other species. The mild nature and selectivity of the DBM reaction allow the efficient use of sensitive biomolecular reagents. Dibromomaleimide (DBM) allows two points of attachment because each bromine can be replaced by a thiol to form two thioether bonds.
