Introduction and Application of Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry(LC-MS)

Liquid Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer(LCMS) is an instrument that combines liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. It combines the effective separation capability of liquid chromatography for thermally unstable and high boiling point compounds with the strong component identification capability of mass spectrometer. It is an effective means to separate and analyze complex organic mixtures.

The key to online is the development of suitable interfaces. The solvent must be removed before the sample components enter the ion source. At present, crawler-type heating conveyor belts are mostly used.
The downsides are:
① Components whose boiling point is similar to or lower than that of the solvent cannot be measured;
②In a sense, the advantages of HPLC separation of thermally unstable substances are lost;
③ The solvent is difficult to volatilize, and the background effect is high, which is not conducive to distinguishing. Therefore, LC/MS is in the developmental stage and the application is not yet widespread enough.

Liquid Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer (LC-MS) is a high-end instrument in the organic analysis market. Liquid Chromatography (LC) can effectively separate the organic components in the organic samples to be tested, while Mass Spectrometry (MS) can analyze the separated organics one by one to obtain the molecular weight, structure (in some cases) and concentration ( quantitative analysis). The powerful electrospray ionization technology makes the LC-MS mass spectrum very simple, and the later data processing is simple. LC-MS is an essential analytical tool for organic matter analysis laboratories, pharmaceutical and food inspection laboratories, production process control, quality inspection and other departments.

LC-MS Features:
Linking liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry can add additional analytical capabilities to accurately identify and quantify trace compounds in complex sample matrices such as cell and tissue lysates, blood, plasma, urine and oral fluids. High performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry systems (ABSciex Eksigent LC/MS and LC/MS/MS) offer some unique advantages, including:
– Minimal sample preparation required for rapid analysis and flow-through
– High sensitivity combined with the ability to analyze multiple compounds, even across compound classes
– High accuracy, high resolution identification and quantification of target analytes

LC-MS applications:
Soil Detection Analysis Using LC/MS/MS
Detecting soil contamination, in particular assessing the soil environment to which humans, animals and plants are exposed, and attempting to reduce this long-term exposure, is imperative.
Gas chromatography (GC) and liquid chromatography (LC) equipped with mass spectrometry (MS) are widely used in soil detection and analysis. Liquid chromatography in particular with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) offers many advantages for trace analysis of moderately polar, polar and ionic compounds in soil samples.

Some specific applications for LC/MS/MS soil analysis include:
-Identification and quantification of targeted multi-residue substances and generally unknown substances down to ng/L levels
– High selectivity, guaranteed reliability of contaminant identification
– Minimal sample preparation, ensuring fast transfer of analytical methods and results
– Provides high sensitivity for contaminant detection, reducing the need for compound derivatization
-Soil organic matter detection, providing the most relevant data results
