Liquid Chromatography – Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LCMSMS, or LC-MS-MS)

Liquid Chromatography – Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LCMSMS) merges the powerful separation capabilities of liquid chromatography with the highly sensitive and selective analysis of triple quadrupole mass spectrometry.

How It Works

  1. Separation: A sample containing analytes is first separated using liquid chromatography. The varying interactions between sample components, the stationary phase, and the mobile phase result in different migration rates through the LC column. By adjusting these phases, effective separation of the sample mixture is achieved.

  2. Mass Analysis: The separated sample is then directed to a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. Here, the sample is nebulized, desolvated, and ionized to create charged particles. These particles are analyzed through a series of mass analyzers, with electromagnetic fields used to filter specific mass/charge (m/z) precursor ions (parent ions) in the first quadrupole. The chosen ions are fragmented into product ions (daughter ions) in a collision cell, and the third quadrupole targets these specific product ions. The resulting ions are quantified using an electron multiplier. This process, known as MS2, provides high specificity for the structure of the compound, ensuring precise and selective analysis.

Benefits

  • High Sensitivity and Selectivity: LCMSMS offers robust quantification based on unique mass/charge transitions, delivering precise and reliable results.
  • Effective Separation and Analysis: Combines the separating power of LC with the high-resolution mass analysis of triple quadrupole mass spectrometry.
